The plans were being laid down on the table in the Silvervale White House. Hayashi Yoshiki, Kirito's campaign manager, encouraged him to go all out in his campaign and take no prisoners, even if they were feeble plumbers who didn't know what they were getting themselves into.
But let's leave the confines of the walls and take a look in the garden where three men whose spy abilities have been perfected by their jobs - namely being reporters - managed to sneak into the perimeter. If you squinted hard enough you could make out three silhouettes dashing from bush to bush to tree to bush one after the other. The first figure stopped behind one particular big bush and waited for the other two.
"Tell me again why we're doing this, Saga..." the brunette of the three said, slightly exasperated. You would be too if you had to slalom through guards, flashlights and guards with flashlights.
"Well, I don't know about you, Tora, but I'm not about to let this guy, even if he's the former president, ruin Aiji and Maya's relationship. Those two deserve each other and I won't allow anyone to come between them!"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Tora slapped his hand over Saga's mouth because of the overly dramatic tone the blonde had taken. "We're in but did you have a plan to get out? This place is as highly guarded as Alcatraz."
"What made you think I even had a plan? I improvised on the way. That's what reporters do." Saga replied indifferently and shrugged.
"What?! Are you crazy?!" Tora started shaking Saga around and his voice got louder and louder. "Do you want to live to be called a reporter after tonight?!"
"Tora! Lower your voice! They'll hear us!" Shou urged him, tugging at his shoulder. "Oh shi--!"
Tora threw his arms around Shou and Saga's shoulders slapping his hands over their mouths and bringing their faces as close to the ground as possible. "Quiet!" Two guards passed the bush about five feet away, talking about one thing or other.
When he thought they were a safe distance away, Tora released Shou and Saga. "Okay. Now, Saga.... Saga, where are you going?! Get back here!" he hissed at Saga who decided to get up the moment he was released and walk somewhere. Tora got up but was pulled by the back of his shirt and he stumbled and fell backwards just as a flashlight shone on the spot he would have been, had he kept standing. When he landed he hit the back of his head on something hard.
Rubbing the injured spot, he opened his eyes and started to get up. He stopped when he saw he was between two legs who couldn't have been any other person's except Shou's. He snapped out of his momentary paralysis when he heard a pained groan coming from behind him. He turned his head and saw Shou laying on the ground, eyes closed and hand over his mouth.
"Shou, you okay?" Tora asked, turning around completely, still very much between Shou's legs but very much not caring, seeing his friend in pain.
"You have a damn hard head. Ow!" Shou said through his hand, his words being a little muffled by it but still intelligible.
Tora's head snapped up as he heard someone talking and he chanced looking over the bush. Three guards were heading their way but there was still quite a distance between them and the bush. "Where the hell is Saga?! I swear I'll kill him if he gets himself caught!" Tora thought as he turned his head in all possible directions, trying to find the blonde. Not seeing him and hearing the guards getting closer he became more and more restless. Finally deciding to get the hell out of there before he and Shou were caught he grabbed Shou's hand and helped him get up. "Shou, we gotta get out of here. Come on."
He cast one more glance to the approaching guards to make sure their gazes were turned in another direction and when the right moment came, he dashed from the bush, dragging Shou after him. It was pretty much as their getting in mission: going from bush to bush, changing their trajectory when guards suddenly appeared in front of them but they managed to get to a part of the estate where there weren't any guards.
Being tired from running around, they sat under a tree and leaned against the trunk, catching their breaths.
"You could be a pretty good spy." Tora heard Shou giggling, but his words were still muffled. He turned to the blonde, smiling.
"Thanks. Now let me see. Hope I didn't knock any teeth out." the brunette tried to lighten the mood with a joke, prying Shou's hand from his mouth. However, Shou didn't seem to enjoy it, his face becoming stern again.
When he successfully took Shou's hand away from his face, he saw his lip was split pretty badly and blood was smeared over his lips and chin, most probably from when he held his hand over the abused body part.
"My gums are killing me." Shou whined.
Tora looked around and saw a pond not far from them. "Wait here." He started walking toward it cautiously, taking in his surroundings. He kneeled on the bank, took a handkerchief from his pocket, soaked it in the water and made his way back to Shou.
He kneeled in front of him and started wiping the blood from his chin. Being this careful with the blonde brought back memories of when they first met in high school and how good friends they've become over the years.
***
There we were: me, Tora and Saga, back in front of the high school building. It was nice... as long as you looked at it from outside the walls of the courtyard. Nice from an architectural point of view as well... if you overlooked the graffiti that adorned its walls.
You know that feeling of happiness teenagers get when school is about to start again because they got really bored during summer and think it'd be really cool when school started again but once they arrived in front of the building that feeling of happiness dissolved and left the desire to crawl under a rock and stay there for the rest of their lives? That's how we felt.
"Man, this sucks." Saga said with a heavy sigh.
"Hear, hear." I agreed. Tora didn't say anything but his face spoke volumes. He looked like he was about to cry.
With weary steps we walked through the gates and the only good thing about this second year was that we were spared the teasing from seniors. Actually, we didn't really know what it was like to be picked on because it rarely happened to us in our freshman year so it was kind of useless to feel sorry for this year's freshmen. We had no idea what they were going through.
Days passed on as they normally did. Classes, lunch, homework, parties, goofing around, witnessing freshmen being picked on by seniors - poor guys -, the regular business.
One day, at lunch, we were sitting at our regular table and talking when we heard a crash. We turned toward the sound and saw four seniors laughing their asses off while a blonde boy - most likely a freshman - was kneeling and trying to salvage what was left of his lunch from the floor. One of the seniors kicked the tray from in front of him and they all started laughing again. How low can you get? Just because you're older doesn't give you the right to do something like that to someone.
Saga and myself almost jumped from out seats and stalked toward the seniors and dragged them out of the cafeteria to have a "talk" with them.
Tora kneeled beside the blond, put a tray on the floor and started gathering what was smeared on the floor. The blonde looked at him, wide eyed. "What are you doing?"
"Helping you, what does it look like?" Tora smiled at him and resumed gathering the remnants of the destroyed lunch. "Come on. I'll throw this away and get you a new tray. Just sit at that table." he said as he got up and pointed at the table we were sitting at previously. The blonde starred at him in surprise but he slowly got up and went where he was told.
***
After having a "talk" with the four seniors, I called Tora on his cell and asked him if he was still in the cafeteria with the freshman. Lunch break had ended about ten minutes prior but Saga and myself still found Tora and the freshman in the cafeteria. Missing one class wouldn't get us in trouble anyway.
"Well, they won't be bothering you anymore." Saga told the freshman as we sat back in our chairs. Tora sat across from the blonde, Saga next to Tora and across from me, and I sat next to the freshman. He gave a shy nod. After a short silence he spoke up. "Thank you. But you didn't need to do that."
"Malarkey!" I said quite peeved. "I may sound like a hypocrite since I haven't felt firsthand what it's like to be picked on - neither have these two - but that doesn't mean we can't say we hate it when it happens to someone." I looked at him and smiled when he smiled and raised his gaze, turning his head to look at me.
"Thank you. You three are the first people to talk to me like an equal." he lowered his gaze again. Tora reached across the table and lifted his chin with his index finger and brought his gaze up again.
"Don't look down. We're not like the rest of them." He looked like something dawned on him and snapped his fingers. "You know, I just realized we haven't introduced ourselves. My name's Tora. These are Saga and Aiji." he said as he pointed to himself and us.
"Shou."
"Nice to meet you, Shou." Saga said enthusiastically, scrambling across the table to shake Shou's hand that he almost tripped and fell on Tora's lap. "Let's be friends." Shou smiled sincerely at that and shook Saga's hand and nodded.
We became inseparable after that and we still had to scare off some seniors who didn't like Shou hanging out with us. Tora, Saga and myself weren't the most popular guys but we did good. We had a lot of the girls head over heals for us and a good number of guys as well. Shou, on the other hand, was the really shy type. The guy who's in your history class but you never notice because he doesn't talk unless asked but who actually is really okay once you get to know him.
One quite nasty experience was when we were one day wasting time at a karaoke bar. We managed to convince Shou to sing and he was really good. There was a frenzy of applause as he got off the stage and he made his way toward us with a million dollar smile that made him even cuter than he already was.
The pride we felt was wiped away as worry filled us when we saw how scared Shou looked when two guys grabbed him and started dragging him in the direction of a back exit. We were instantly on their tail and when we got outside, Shou was sprawled on the ground, sobbing softly. Before I could register what had happened, Tora already had one of the guys on the ground after a punch and was glaring daggers at the other. I snapped back to reality and both me and Saga jumped the guy that was getting up and wanted to get Tora from behind.
After our scuffle the two bastards ran away in a bloody mess courtesy of mine and Saga's kendo skills and Tora's kickboxing ones.
We turned to Shou and Tora hugged him tightly. His lip was split and a trail of blood ran down his chin from the corner of his mouth. He could hardly talk. The guy who hit him really had it in for him. Two weeks his jaw was bruised and I never saw Tora being so protective of him. He would have killed anyone who even looked the wrong way in Shou's direction and it took about a month for Shou to get back to normal and not act like a scared child.
Saga and I thought they would get together after all that but they didn't. Then we tried to give them a little nudge. It didn't work. We tried to give them a good shove. Not a chance. After seeing that nothing worked we gave up, thinking we were getting carried away and they really didn't like each other that way. Then we grew up a little and realized we were being childish. A friendship like ours didn't need anything else.
***
"Ouch! Watch it!" Shou yelped and grabbed Tora's wrist. That snapped Tora back to reality and he became very aware of how close he was to the blonde.
"Sorry..." he breathed and felt like drowning in Shou's deep hazel eyes. The affection he had developed for the blonde had long since grown into something deeper than just friendship but he was afraid it would ruin what they had. But sitting in front of Shou made Tora realize why he had those feelings.
What if he kissed him right then? God knows he wanted to so badly but it probably wasn't a good idea. He should have stopped those thoughts and got his brain back on track but, unconsciously, he leaned forward and kissed the blonde. Shou's breath hitched in his throat and his eyes widened at Tora's action. But he closed them when the brunette started moving his lips against his own.
It was a short kiss and it ended as suddenly as it began. Shou looked straight at the brunette when they broke apart. "Tora... you...."
Tora smiled at the blonde's stuttering and trailed a thumb under the split lip. "Guess I'm kind of slow. Took me long enough to realize I liked you more than just a friend." His confession was cut short by Shou's lips on his again. But the kiss was short lived when Shou pulled away yelping and covering his mouth with a hand. Tora laughed lightly at that. "Be careful. That lip is still sensitive."
"No shit, Sherlock!" Shou threw him a glare.
Tora smiled at him again and then turned serious. "I'll try calling Saga. Hope he didn't get caught." He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Saga's number. After three rings he answered.
"Hi, mom! How are you?"
Tora sighed. That's what he told Saga to call him when he was in a jam and didn't want to give away his friends. "I'm fine. I'm with your brother in the garden right now and I wanted to see how you were doing. Are you okay?"
"Oh, yeah! I'm fine! Hanging around with my three best friends!"
Damn. There were three guards who were next to him. What could Tora do? He didn't even know where Saga was, let alone think up a plan to help him.
"Don't worry about me, mom. I'll pass by your place tomorrow. Hope your cholesterol's gone down since last time I came by. Love, you!"
***
Saga smiled as he hung up and put his phone back in his pocket.
"That should work nicely. Hope those two wake up soon and smell the posies." he told himself as he walked into an all-night bar & grill.
***
Tora looked suspiciously at his phone after Saga hung up. He looked back at Shou and sighed. "He used our got-caught-and-I'll-talk-trash-to-lead-t hem-off code. But he was too enthusiastic. I have my doubts he's actually in harm's way. Come on, let's get out of here."
He took Shou's hand, lifted him up and started to slowly and cautiously make their way out of the estate without getting themselves caught.
