What was the most important part of a game, be it soccer, basketball or handball? Some would say that the victory of your favorite team while others would argue that the breaks during which the cheerleaders raised morale and gathered a lot of sympathizers either for themselves or for the team. So, as you can see, opinions are divided.
Shou had to admit that the cheerleaders were doing a great job of getting everybody pumped up for the soccer game between Tsudara, his school, and Minomoki but he was currently looking for Akiya and Nao who had come to the gym earlier so they could get some good seats in the stands.
As he was standing on the steps of the stands on the right side of the game court and looked around, trying to find the heads of his two classmates through the sea of heads that weren't only from his school, he saw the two soccer teams come out for their warm-up. He wondered if Tora and the others still had enough vigor in them to play.
"Here you are! I've been looking all over for you!" Nao grabbed his arm and dragged him to the seats he and Akiya had saved.
"Wow, you two really got good seats!" He exclaimed when Nao had successfully brought him through the throng of spectators to the second-row seats they had.
"I told you we won't regret coming two hours early." Akiya remarked as they sat down on the seats next to his. Shou was in the middle with Akiya on his left and Nao on his right.
Coming back to the issue of whether their soccer team was still able to play, it looked like they wouldn't be having any problems, judging by how they were running around for their warm up and how they were sucking in the praises, screams and cheers like sponges. Shou could practically see Hiroto, Reita and Tora's heads getting bigger by the second.
The whistle signaling it was time for the game to begin was heard throughout the gym and the stands erupted in even louder cheers as the players set off to give their all and win.
Ten minutes into the game and the score was Tsudara 1, Minomoki nil. Hiroto was the proud owner of the first goal and Shou was certain the short blonde's head had grown twice its already-overgrown-from-before size.
Shou jumped off his seat a little when Akiya and Nao sprang up suddenly, yelling their heads off and holding something up. Shou peeked at it and raised an eyebrow when he saw it was a giant placard with "Hiroto" written on it in huge, bold lettering.
"Dude, what the heck?!" he managed to choke out before starting to laugh with all his might.
"Oh, shut it and get up here! He's your friend, isn't he?"
Without replying anything Shou obediently got up, grabbed the middle of the placard and for the next few minutes he, along with Nao and Akiya, bounced in their places cheering and chanting, making the other students from Tsudara come alive. Akiya gave Shou a smug look when they sat back down but he didn't get to say anything because Shou warned him about it.
Not even ten minutes later everybody was on the edge of their seats because one of the Minomoki players was in hot pursuit of Tora, who was going in for the kill. The guy was fast, everyone had to admit that, and he was being quite a thorn in Tora's side but he wasn't dexterous enough so he didn't manage to get the ball away from Tsudara's favorite player.
Shou felt like he deflated when all that tension left him and he slumped in his seat heaving a sigh instead of jumping up and down when Tora scored the second goal. He jumped again when a placard that was smaller than the one for Hiroto landed on his lap. He looked at it and raised an eyebrow once more at Akiya. Said friend and classmate only grabbed Shou by the arm and pulled him to his feet. He then proceeded, with Nao's help, to raise Shou's arms with the placard above his head.
"Dude, what is wrong with you?! Yell! Scream! Do something! Tora scored!"
"Well, it would have been nice of you guys to let me know you were making placards and to warn me before dumping the one with Tora's name on it in my lap." Shou remarked, putting on his best hurt look. Too bad Akiya and Nao were working on a technique to become immune to it.
After sharing a laugh a few seconds later, Shou joined in the placard waving frenzy. The game became more and more intense and he didn't even notice his "Tora" placard was now flanked by two smaller "Hiroto" ones. Should he have noticed, his mind would have only been sent into a whirling vortex of questions concerning where they had come from and where did his two friends have the space to put them in.
A honey blonde figure, in the stands opposite the ones Shou was in, was frowning at his overexcited display. Maybe that frown wouldn't have been sent straight at Shou had the brown haired senior not waved that placard like he was a monkey holding the secret to cloning bananas. Tora did have the habit of calling him Chita, didn't he? Key word here being "maybe" since with Uruha you never knew.
***
Victory was sweet and every single player in Tsudara's soccer team was on a sugar high. The locker rooms were filled with cheers and the showers were no less noisy. Tora exited his team's locker room with a big smile on his face. It was a big bummer they had to train all day but in the end it was worth it. It felt great to have your entire school cheering you on and motivating you, giving you strength to pull through.
He walked right back into the main hall of the gym since the basketball game started when the soccer game ended. Before looking for Uruha in the stands to go and sit with him, Tora looked at the scoreboard and he frowned. Tsudara and Minomoki were tied but he couldn't fathom why - his school's basketball team, as far as he knew, was a lot better that Minomoki's team and a lot more prepared.
He looked at how the team was playing to see if he could pinpoint what was happening and was surprised when he didn't see Shou on the court. Turning his head towards the benches, he saw his friend sitting down, holding an ice pack to his shoulder.
He made his way to the stands that were behind the benches fast and, thankfully, he found an empty seat in the front row. He left the backpack with his gear on the seat and approached the railing, wanting to talk to Shou.
"Hey, Shou! What happened?"
"Oh, Tora... hi!" Shou replied after turning his head to who had called him. "Just a few hard faults. Minomoki really wants to win this game after you guys humiliated them in the soccer game." He explained.
Tora frowned. "And they have to get you out of the picture to accomplish that." It wasn't a secret that Shou was one of the best basketball players of the neighboring schools.
"Don't worry. You think I'm going to let them get away with this? Dream on, buddy! Just sit back and enjoy the show." Shou said with a big grin on his face and full of determination. Tora smiled at him and nodded, after which he went back to the seat he had claimed and watched the game like a good supporter.
His cell phone vibrated in his pocket and it caused Tora to miss a really nice execution of one of Shou's teammates which led to gaining for Tsudara two points ahead of Minomoki.
"Dude, what are you doing there?!" It was Uruha. Tora hadn't even checked the caller ID. "I'm in the stands opposite of you."
"Sorry, babe. I see you but it looks like you forgot to spare me a seat. Is there something I should know about that guy?" Tora asked with a smirk spreading on his face. The guy next to Uruha was a middle aged man with a big beer belly and premature balding.
"Tora! Yuck!" It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Tora was laughing his ass off at his boyfriend's reaction. He had expected Uruha not to like his insinuation but he almost felt sorry he wasn't next to him to see his face.
"I'll see you after the game, okay? I'm not going anywhere."
"Okay... See ya." Uruha said reluctantly.
Five minutes later, Shou was back on the court and it looked like the team had woken up. They started to distance themselves score-wise from Minomoki and their adversaries weren't happy about it. A few more nasty faults happened, some of them having Shou as their target but he wasn't the only one affected.
Seeing that it didn't really paid off to act like a bunch of Neanderthals minus the clubs and thick foreheads, the Minomoki team concentrated on a more tactical approach. It paid off too - not that Tora or any other Tsudara supporter liked that.
Throughout the game, the score was tight and it looked like the Minomoki team had trained seriously for the past year. There were only a few seconds of the game left and Minomoki was leading by one point. Tsudara had the ball so it was their last chance to get it through the hoop and take the lead, winning the game.
Fast passes and dribbles succeeded until the ball was passed lastly to Shou who was heading for the hoop dangerously. Before he could jump and shoot, someone from Minomoki slammed into him, sending him to the floor. The whistle signaling the end of the game rang throughout the gym at the same time as the referee whistled, granting two free shots.
Shou was pulled up by one of his teammates and he took his position to make the shots. The stands, as incredible as it might have been, shut up the moment he took the ball into his hands and sprang back to life when it went through the hoop. Tsudara hadn't lost but they hadn't won either - the score was now tied and Shou took a deep breath and said a silent prayer so that the ball would go through the hoop again and they could win. He could feel his heartbeat in his ears and could imagine every supporter biting their nails off. It almost seemed like hours before he shot and the same amount of hours before the ball went through the hoop and Tsudara officially won the basketball game.
Everybody in the stands jumped up and, who had bought any, dumped the popcorn they had in their laps on the heads of those in front of them but who cared when their team won?
Shou could hardly believe that it was true and he didn't acknowledge right away the fact that his teammates lifted him off the ground and started carrying him on their shoulders. When he did acknowledge it, he wished he hadn't because they started throwing him up and he wasn't all that sure of what strength they had in their arms so they could hold him when he came back down.
Confetti and decorations were flying everywhere, music was blasting through the speakers brought in the gym especially for this event and people were screaming, cheering, yelling 'I love you's and whatnot - it felt great!
Eventually, Shou was put down and when he got a feel on being back on the ground he was face to face with Tora, who was smiling at him with the biggest pride he had seen in the brunette's eyes. It made him smile too.
"Way to got there, Chita! You did great! Can I give a hug to the savior of the school's pride?"
Shou couldn't help but laugh but he gave Tora permission - he didn't actually need any permission but who could tell what was going on in Tora's head most of the time? They hugged and Shou yelped and threw his arms around his friend's neck when his feet were lifted off the ground and he was spun around.
"You maniac, put me down! I'm getting dizzy!" It was a wonder Tora wasn't. He was holding Shou bride-style and spinning in place with him. The guy acted like that friggin' cartoon Tasmanian devil except for the unintelligible speech.
"Can't I be happy my little monkey did so well today?" Tora placed Shou back on the ground, laughing in good joy. He wasn't actually talking about just the basketball game but about every event Shou participated in and won or gave his all to win.
"Whatever." Shou replied after he grounded his feet well enough. "Jerk!" he said as he turned around and headed for the locker rooms.
"Bitch." Tora shot back with a smirk. Shou stopped and glared at him playfully but then kept on his way to take a shower and get changed.
***
Shou was among the last of his teammates to leave the locker rooms. He walked down the hall that wasn't as brightly lit as it had been thirty minutes before, since not many people remained in the school. The janitors had to help make economy of electricity, didn't they?
He had his head buried in his backpack, arranging his belongings in it, since he had just thrown them in and they weren't all that comfortable against his back, when he jumped and yelped as someone called his name. Looking at the figure in front of him, leaning against the wall, he calmed down.
"Sorry for scaring you." The dark haired boy said smiling and approached Shou. "My name's Miyavi."
"It's okay. I guess I'm a little bit jumpy." Shou laughed. "Shou. You look familiar. You were at Tora's birthday party the other week, right?"
"Guilty as charged. I've got some friends in this school so I figured I'd come and see what they do in the games with that other high school. By the way, I loved how you played! You were great!"
"Thanks." Shou smiled appreciatively.
"You're being modest. I can see you starting to blush." Miyavi closed in on Shou's face really fast and made the brown haired boy reel his head back. "You've got no reason to be modest. Yell out to the world that you feel wonderful and that you're the best!" Miyavi yelled as he threw an arm around Shou's shoulders and squeezed him tight. The guy was funny but he was scaring Shou a bit at the same time. He didn't know him, didn't know anything about him - apart from the fact he was one of Tora's friends - and here he was, hugging and talking to Shou like they knew each other since forever.
"What's all the noise here?" Shou relaxed when he heard that familiar voice. "Miyavi, is that you? What are you doing here?"
"Yep, it's me, Tiger." Miyavi replied cheerfully. "I came to see what you guys were going to do in these games with Minomoki. Nice playing on your part, my man. Those dudes never knew what hit 'em!"
"Uh, thanks." Tora was thankful for the compliment, that much Shou could make out. He could also make out that he wasn't all that used to Miyavi's odd behavior. What he couldn't make out was why he seemed to feel a bit uncomfortable with Miyavi around. "I see you've met Shou."
"Yeah, the star of the basketball team. Birds of a feather flock together, eh?" Both Tora and Shou raised an eyebrow at Miyavi's comment and he seemed surprised they didn't get why he had said that. "Dude, you're the best players in your teams and you're best friends. Do I need to draw you a picture or something?!"
"Uh, right." Tora clearly didn't know how to act around Miyavi and what to think of him, something that made Shou wonder how well he knew him. "Shou, you ready to go?"
"Go? Where?" Shou hadn't paid as much attention as he should have and he thought he lost the first part of Tora's statement.
"Home." Tora informed him.
"Oh! Uruha doesn't want to kidnap you?" Shou asked skeptically.
"Yes, he does but I'm so beat that if I close my eyes for a few seconds I'll fall asleep standing, like a horse." Tora answered and approached his friend, taking his backpack.
Shou had forgotten Miyavi's arm was still around his shoulders but he was reminded when said dark haired boy wrapped his other arm around Shou's waist and buried his face in his chest, as if protecting him from Tora. Needless to say that such an act caused both Tora and Shou's eyes to widen, both in surprise but one of them was scared too. Shou didn't like where this was going.
"Um, sorry, but I have to go." He said and gently pushed Miyavi in the chest to get out of the boy's grip but he ended up pushing harder and harder since the other didn't seem to want to let go. Finally, Miyavi loosened his grip and Shou extracted himself from his arms and walked away from him fast.
"See you some other time, Miyavi." Tora said and turned, catching up to Shou, who had passed him. "Come on, it's okay." He said soothingly and put an arm around Shou's shoulders, rubbing his friend's arm. "He's harmless. Weird, but harmless."
Shou tried to believe that but Tora didn't know how tight Miyavi had held him. He was certain the dark haired boy probably had felt that Shou started to shake a little and that's why the embrace had gotten tighter and tighter. What scared him more was the fact that Miyavi didn't say anything while he was holding Shou, something that unnerved him greatly. He just hoped he wouldn't be seeing Miyavi too soon. Better to be safe than sorry.
