Tora's neighbors were an understanding bunch. As is in every neighborhood, there were the occasional geriatrics who wouldn't mind their own business. Every time one of them would get on his nerves, Tora would shout that the lady with a scythe was looking for them at their house and they were butting into somebody else's business. Not the most intelligent thing to say to your every day senior citizen but Tora used to have a short fuse. Of course, the ones that were more than okay outnumbered the escaped fossils but there was so much they could take as well.
That is why, with the clock striking the wonderful hour of 4 in the morning, phone calls of starting to wrap things up began to come in. At least his neighbors had the decency to ask Tora nicely to end the party, rather than call the police. He was sure the old museum pieces' fingers were itching to call the authorities. Too bad Tora was considerate of the good natured people living near him and within hearing range of the party. Just to spite the old geezers, he would have cranked the volume higher but he wasn't a glutton for punishment.
"Too bad it has to end now." said Reita as he followed Tora around. The brunette had asked him to help look over everything in the house to see if anything was damaged. No one left before they were done so if the slightest chip was found on anything, there would be murder on Tora's part.
"Yeah, but my parents left me a house, not a club. It was great while it lasted." Tora chuckled, eyes roaming around every part of the rooms they were going through.
Reita chuckled too and, patting Tora's shoulder, he continued. "You're right. You outdid yourself this time, man. Nice job!"
"What are you two doing over here, hm?"
They both turned around and snorted while trying to keep their laughing fits inside at the site in front of them. Uruha and Ruki had an arm around the other's shoulders, a glass of whatever booze was left in their hands each and they were swaying from left to right as they tried to walk toward Reita and Tora. Needless to say they were more the hilarious site because of the height difference, Uruha looking like he would topple over any minute and Ruki looking like he had blocked his shoulder from trying to reach so high up.
"You're not trying to do the nasty behind our backs, hmm?" Uruha said as he unlatched himself from Ruki and they both stumbled forward.
Tora caught Ruki and Reita caught Uruha. They stared at each other for a few moments after which they burst out laughing and exchanged boyfriends so that they now had the right person in their arms.
"Keep yourself on your feet, shorty. I don't have my motorcycle and I can't give you a piggyback ride home." Reita chuckled when Ruki's knees gave out a little. The shorter blonde didn't seem affected by the lack of response his limbs were giving and let out a sound that you normally would make when you were in a roller coaster. Of course, his head must have been swimming so much that he probably thought he was in one.
"'m not sho't." he managed to slur out between giggles and made to grab Reita's nose between his fingers. He didn't manage but he still kept at it. Perseverance usually takes you a long way but when your supposed victim has a nose sock as a shield, you should probably give up trying.

The noise went down considerably since the music was turned off but the guests were still very much drunk and very much didn't remember how to keep the volume of their voices down. Again, Tora was grateful to his neighbors' understanding because once they saw people starting to leave, regardless of the laughing and yelling, they didn't give Tora a hard time.
"Nice going with this party, man. Happy birthday once more." one of the departing guests said to Tora and patted his back.
The brunette was right outside his door, seeing all his guests out, just like a good host should. That night was really special, as Shou had said, but a part of Tora didn't have as much fun as was possible because he couldn't share that special occasion with his best friend.
"Hey, man, I've been meaning to ask you this." Tora looked at the person who spoke and recognized him as Miyavi, one of the people he had met through Uruha. Miyavi was the same age as Tora, only he had dropped out of school a year prior to pursue one of his dreams. Yes, one of his dreams. It didn't quite work out but he was perseverant. From what Tora could remember, Uruha said Miyavi was now working as a waiter, trying to save up enough money to move out of his parents' house.
"What is it?"
"That guy you were talking to a few hours earlier – the one who came and then left a short while later. Who is he?" Tora had a bit of a problem putting a face to the person Miyavi was describing but he didn't have to work his mind too much because the brunette in front of him pointed somewhere and said that he saw the person he had asked about.
Tora looked in the direction of Miyavi's finger and his eyes fell on the figure in the garden next to his house. He wore a red T-shirt and loose pajama pants, his hair a bit tousled, indicating that he had been asleep or at least trying to. His eyes were downcast, following something that was moving around the lawn.
As if feeling eyes were on him, he looked in the direction of the emptying house, his eyes meeting Tora's and Miyavi's. They stared at each other for a second but the receiver of Miyavi's attention felt something on his leg and bent down. When he came back up, the two brunettes could see he had a cat in his arms. With one last glance, he went back inside his own home.
"Well?" Miyavi asked expectantly.
Tora's eyes lingered on the now closed front door and with a sigh he turned around to face Miyavi. "His name's Shou." A grin spread across Miyavi's face and his eyes sparkled. "But he's not up for grabs." The grin fell and the sparkle disappeared.
"Not up for grabs?" Miyavi asked raising an eyebrow. Tora could slap himself for letting those words out. He hoped Uruha wasn't anywhere near so he could hear anything incriminating. "Why do you say that? You're not two-timing Uruha, are you?" Miyavi smirked, although it was a playful question.
"Yes, Tora, why do you say that?"
Fuck! Uruha joining in wasn't something Tora wanted. He gulped and thought of how to get himself out of such an awkward situation. With Miyavi it might have been really easy but Uruha wasn't going to let it slide just like that.
"Well, he's already got his eye on someone." he said after a moment of thinking.
"Really?" Uruha asked skeptically. Miyavi seemed a bit skeptical himself but he really didn't know what to believe since he barely knew anything at all about Shou.
"Yes, really." Tora's tone lost its uncertainty. He had to turn the situation favorable to Shou. He didn't want Uruha's imagination to start running amok and do something quite unpleasant. "I'm his best friend, remember? He confided in me."
"And just who does he have his eye on, hmm?" Uruha asked crossing his arms over his chest. Miyavi looked a bit lost. Tora was certain his boyfriend wouldn't let it slide and he was kicking himself mentally for letting that little statement slip past his lips. Actually, why did he say that? He just blurted it out when he saw that gleaming look in Miyavi's eyes.
"I'm not going to say anything as long as he doesn't want it to be known by anyone other than him and me."
Uruha gave him a hard look but Tora ignored him. He had become quite good at it. If 'Ignoring Uruha' ever become some sort of sport event, Tora would be the champion.
"Well, I guess it's better luck next time." Miyavi laughed and patted Tora's shoulder. "See you around."
***
Having a 'discussion' with your overly jealous boyfriend wasn't Tora's idea of spending some time after a party. When all the guests were gone, Uruha said he and Tora had something to discuss that couldn't wait until the next day.
"Are you cheating on me?" Tora stopped dead in his tracks as he went to get a glass of water to help clear his mind. He turned around and the stunned look on his face met Uruha's steady yet hard gaze. "I guess I should ask are you cheating on me with Shou?"
"What the hell gave you that idea?" All thoughts of a glass of water were forgotten and Tora stormed his way to his boyfriend seated in an armchair. "Did someone say something like that to you?"
Uruha's look didn't falter one bit – he was dead serious. "It looks like Shou is more important to you than I am. We hardly spend any time together and everything you do revolves around him. How the hell am I supposed to feel?"
Tora sighed and ran a hand through his hair. Uruha was right to a certain extent – they hadn't spent much time together lately and he had neglected Uruha a bit but he had to get his baggage straight because he had to finish high school with good grades and get into a good university. There had to be some sacrifices he had to make.
He knelt in front of Uruha and put his hands over the honey blonde's knees. "Uruha, I'm sorry. I understand where you're coming from but you can't blame Shou just because he's helping me. I really am sorry but please, try to understand."
One of Tora's hands cupped Uruha's cheek and brought him down for a kiss. At first, the honey blonde wasn't too responsive but he sighed and returned the kiss. Shou was right when he said Tora had feelings for Uruha. When he was accused of cheating, he felt like something stabbed his heart. The thought of Uruha not trusting him hurt.
Hardly had the kiss ended when Uruha let his mouth go. "He's going to break us up, Tora."
The brunette could hardly believe his ears. Was Uruha's mind that one-tracked? Couldn't he bury the hatchet and let bygones be bygones? Apparently not. Tora flew to his feet and made a distance of a few paces between them.
"How can you say that? You don't know him. You haven't even given him a chance. What has he ever done to deserve such hatred from you?"
"Tora, I see who he really is. Because I don't know him I can be impartial when I judge him. You've known him all your life so you can't possibly imagine he has a negative streak in him."
"No!" Tora shouted. Uruha had gotten up from the arm chair but didn't make a move toward the brunette when he shouted. "You don't know what he's done to make sure we're together."
"Tora..." The honey blonde started walking toward him.
"Uruha, leave."
"Tora, listen..." Uruha pleaded.
"Leave now!"
***
He tossed and turned in his bed for about an hour. By then he was certain sleep wasn't going to come to him that night. Why did Uruha have to be so hostile toward Shou? There were times when they had tried to talk it out but something went wrong every time.
Tora sighed and threw the covers from his body and sat up in his bed. He looked out his window but the view brought his gaze on the corner of Shou's house and not his window. Tora sighed and got up but was met with the blue curtains drawn over Shou's window. He wondered if his friend had managed to fall asleep. While the party was in full blow he knew for a fact Shou couldn't have been able to sleep.
Turning around, he saw on his nightstand the bag Shou had given him earlier. He was so upset that he had forgotten about it and hadn't looked at what his friend had given him. Sitting cross legged on his bed with the bag in front of him, he looked inside it and found there boxes: two small ones and a larger one.
He took the larger one out and carefully opened the wrapper. The box was white cardboard but that didn't matter. What mattered was the framed picture it held inside. Tora looked at it and smiled. The picture was of him and Shou a few months ago. They were at a local festival, wearing traditional yukata. Tora remembered that day and how many laughs they had had when Shou slipped on something and plummeted to the ground, his butt hurting for more than two hours. He remembered they had been bothered by some mannerless kids who wouldn't shut up and both he and Shou stuck them in a dunking tank. The day ended with the picture he was currently holding in his hands. He thought that Shou had completely forgotten he needed to make Tora a copy of it since they had money left only for one picture.
Placing the picture aside, he unwrapped one of the smaller boxes. The velvet texture of what was under the wrapper felt nice against his fingers but what he found inside was even nicer. The bracelet was silver and most would think it was too girly. It actually was just right – not too thin and not too thick. It looked fragile but it was quite resistant. Tora chuckled and thought that maybe it would suit Shou more than himself.
He picked up the last box and the same velvet texture was under the wrapper. He found a slim and delicate square shaped locket inside. The silver chain was a perfect match with the bracelet and Tora found himself smiling broader. He opened the locket but there weren't any pictures inside. Shou must have wanted Tora to make the decision of what to put in it.
He placed the picture on his nightstand with the bracelet and locket in front of it and got back in bed pulling the covers over himself. Maybe he would be able to sleep now. He still had to spend the next day – actually that exact day since more than five hours had passed since midnight – with Shou, as a more private celebration of his birthday. Tora smiled at the thought and fell asleep just like that, smiling.
