The auditorium, contrary to popular belief, during rehearsals was not in the slightest bit quiet. Usually, backstage was where the biggest chaos took place, where pieces of decor were looked over to see if they were in good condition, where lists with props were checked and rechecked to make sure nothing was missing.
One part of the stage was occupied by the technician team, testing the lighting and any other electrical appliances that were needed for the play, while the other part was occupied by the four actors who would be performing in a month and a half.
Class 3-A had decided what to do for the culture festival a lot earlier than any of the other classes and were in the hype of preparations. Yumiko, the class president and the director of the play, was usually a very nice and calm girl but as she shouted instructions to everyone and corrected mistakes the four actors made, she gained the unofficial title of 'slave driver'.
"I thought we decided to change that part, Hiroto." she said after stopping the exchange of lines for the umpteenth time.
"Since when?" replied Hiroto, visibly irritated with all the interruptions and now he was told he had learned his lines wrong.
Yumiko ran a hand through her hair and sighed. "Mina! Didn't you give them the new scripts?"
"Mina's not here! She went to pick up the costumes!" came the hollered reply from backstage.
"Here, look at mine. I'll photo copy it and give the copies to you guys later." she said and handed Hiroto the script she used to follow the lines.
Two hours later found the auditorium in the same state it had been since morning. Luckily, the modified script didn't have any major changes and Shou, Hiroto, Nao and Akiya could practice without looking in it every two minutes.
The doors of the auditorium opened and closed as a girl walked in, carrying four plastic bags.
"I got the costumes, Yumiko." As she approached the stage a paper bag could be seen in her right hand. "And I managed to copy the new script. Sorry I didn't do it earlier."
"At least something went right." Yumiko said as he took the paper bag from Mina. "Guys, let's get you backstage and into these costumes. If they don't fit this is the time to send them back for retouching."
***
In the end, all four costumes had to be sent back for retouching, something which didn't make Yumiko happy in the least bit. Shou's and Nao's pants were too tight – tight, as in holding-your-breath-tight; Hiroto's overall was too long and Akiya's costume was disproportionate.
Classes were over and Yumiko didn't want anything else than to get away from the auditorium and drown herself in a bucket of pistachio ice cream. So, of course, she sent everybody home.
Shou had exited the auditorium and was walking down the hallway, heading for the school exit. He heard footsteps and turned around to see who it was. He resumed his course at a faster pace when he saw the brunette who was trying to open the doors to the auditorium. Shou was the last to leave and he had locked them so if he wanted to get away, he had to do it fast.
"Shou!" Too late. He kept walking, not slowing his pace.
"He's calling for you? Can't you hear him?
"What the fuck? Who said that?"
"You're the prodigy, Einstein. You figure it out."
"Shou, wait!" Shou didn't pay any heed to the words and kept walking but the person started running and caught up with him. That didn't make the brown haired student stop, though. "Shou, we need to talk."
"Do we?" he said immediately.
"What do you mean 'do we'?" Tora grabbed Shou's arm, successful in stopping him. "Yes, we do. We need to clear up last night."
"Nothing happened last night."
"Pfff, get over yourself, you martyr!"
"Just what is your problem?"
"I'm your conscience, that's my problem."
Tora blinked. He couldn't have heard right, could he? Shou still wasn't looking at him. "What?" That was the only thing he could say.
Taking a breath and releasing it, Shou turned to Tora. "Look, I'm willing to overlook everything. It's better if we act like nothing happened."
"Better for whom? That Uruha guy maybe."
"Shut up, conscience!"
The brunette's eyes widened in surprise. "What do you mean? Shou..."
Shou lifted his hand, signaling Tora to shut up and pay attention. "Listen to me. You an Uruha have been together for almost two years. Knowing you, you've been with him for so long because you feel something for him – it's not just for the sex. Do you want to cheat on him with me? Do you want to give him more reasons to hate me?"
"Are you for real?! That's rich!"
"Whoa! Hold it! Who ever said anything about cheating and reasons to hate you?"
Shou once again cut him off. "Look, I'm not going to compromise anything between you and Uruha and I'm not going to start acting weird around you or avoid you. I'll pretend like nothing happened and it'll all be fine. Considering the occasion at the end of the week, I guess we should act as normal around each other as we can."
The brunette sighed and rubbed his eyes. This wasn't how he wanted to talk to Shou and clear things up. Actually, nothing was cleared up.
"Tora, I really need to get home. Let's not have a tutoring session tonight and you can think about what I said."
Tora nodded in reply and watched Shou's retreating back as he continued walking down the hallway and exited the school. Sure, they could act like nothing happened but that wouldn't make the kiss go away; it wouldn't make the fact that Tora enjoyed it to a certain extent go away. Things had really turned sour and the brunette didn't see a way of sweetening them back.
"That was so dramatic! Makes me wanna shed a tear for your forbidden love."
"Oh stuff it! A lot of help you are. I think I got ripped off when I got you." Shou huffed in his head to his conscience.
***
Nao wanted the rest of the day to be as uneventful as possible. In his mind, everything would be perfect if he could go home, eat something and possibly sleep until 8 PM when, whether he liked it or not, he had to wake up to do his homework for Tuesday.
He wanted the day to be uneventful when Ruka called out to him as he was walking through the school grounds, heading for the gate. But reality is a bitch more often than not and Nao found himself pinned against a tree, Ruka smirking down at him.
"Why in such a hurry, Pooh-chan?"
Nao didn't bother answering and tried to get out of Ruka's grip. The taller student wouldn't stand for being ignored anymore and slammed Nao against the tree to get him to hold still. Ruka pressed his body to Nao's and the shorter student looked away.
"Are you scared?" Ruka asked and started kissing Nao's neck, moving up to his jaw.
Nao's breath hitched and he tried to shy away from Ruka's touch as much as he could. Too bad the tree trunk was blocking his way from moving back. He flinched when he felt one of the taller student's hands move down his chest and stop on his hip, just above the belt of his uniform pants.
"Hey! What are you doing?"
Nao let out a breath of relief when he felt Ruka's mouth leave his skin. He had never been so glad to hear Saga's voice. He turned his head to look at the blonde coming from the school building, hoping to send him a look that clearly said 'get him off me or I will faint'.
Ruka looked at Saga, then at Nao's face after the shorter teen turned his head to look at the blonde and he smirked. It was high time he showed Saga he was serious about not giving up easily. Without warning, Ruka grabbed Nao's chin and crashed his lips to the brown haired student's. Nao started struggling, trying to push him away, and Ruka was certain Saga was fuming.
"Get away from him!"
Saga grabbed Ruka by the collar and pulled him away from Nao, granting the trapped student freedom and the ability to breathe.
"I said I don't give up easily, blondie." Ruka leered. "And watch yourself." Ruka gritted through his teeth as he grabbed Saga by the collar, bringing their faces close. "The only thing keeping me from socking you a good one is the fact that you're one of us. But keep acting like you've been for the past week and you're going to find yourself in a tight spot."
He released Saga's collar and left, but not without sending a kiss to Nao and winking at him.
Saga ran a hand through his hair and went to Nao's side, who was now leaning against the tree, hugging himself. He bent down and picked up the back pack that the shorter student had dropped when he was slammed against the tree trunk by Ruka.
"Are you okay? Did he do anything else?" Nao shook his head and Saga heaved a sigh of relief that Ruka didn't have time to go further. Saga was certain that he would have, had the blonde not interfered. "He just kissed you then?"
"He didn't just kiss me." Nao cut him off in a low tone of voice and grabbed his back pack roughly. "He took my first kiss." Saga was surprised at Nao's snappish attitude but he figured the shorter student needed to let off some steam after his encounter with Ruka. "Call me sappy, call me stupid, call me whatever you want but I wanted my first kiss to be special and I just gave it to Ruka."
"Whoa, Nao, take it easy. I didn't mean anythi..."
"Sorry for acting like the inexperienced virgin I am, Saga!"
Nao's last comment made Saga flinch. The shorter teen then turned on his heel and went for the school gate as fast as he could, just to get away from everything, and Saga was left gaping. He didn't blame Nao for being snappy in the least bit but he didn't think the normally soft spoken student would be that mad.
"That's one of Shou's classmates, right? Nao was it?"
Saga jumped at the sudden voice but he calmed down when he saw it was Tora. He nodded to confirm that Tora was right.
"What happened? Even though I don't know him that well, I don't think I've seen him snap at anyone." said Tora as he approached Saga.
The blonde ran a hand through his hair and sighed, trying to form his sentences in an eloquent manner. If there was one person he could openly speak to and not be made fun of or considered a loser, it was Tora. Whatever the two spoke always remained between them.
"Ruka tried to force himself onto Nao. I managed to get him to leave and I asked Nao if the only thing Ruka did was just kiss him. Apparently, that was his first kiss and I guess he thought I don't care much about kisses. That's why he snapped." Saga informed Tora.
"His first kiss, huh?" Tora repeated.
"Yeah. I have to say I admire that he wanted to save it for a special someone. Nowadays, when people are sucking face out of the smallest things, a first kiss at this age is something really special."
The soft tone Saga used to say that as well as the contents of the phrase itself sent Tora into a whirlpool of thoughts. Had he taken Shou's first kiss the previous night? Was that why Shou was acting so weird and didn't want to talk about it? If it was so, how could he make things right?
Seeing the pensive and somewhat distressed look on the brunette's face, Saga put his hand on Tora's shoulder to get his attention.
"You okay, Tora?"
"Not really." he replied after being brought back from his thoughts.
"Why? What's wrong?"
Basing himself on the same knowledge that what was spoken between them stayed between them, Tora informed Saga of what had happened the previous night and also of his earlier talk with Shou. It was good to have someone to talk to – two heads were better than one at understanding things and at finding a possible solution.
"Let me see if I got this straight: you've been with Uruha for almost two years and last night you kissed Shou, while you're still with Uruha for almost two years." Tora frowned at how Saga was retelling everything to make sure he had all the facts right. "Today you wanted to talk to Shou but he said he would pretend like nothing happened so he wouldn't jeopardize your relationship with Uruha which has been lasting for almost two years and to save his skin from Uruha's wrath."
"Thank you for making me out to be a two-timing bastard, Saga."
"Anytime." Tora whacked him in the arm after that remark. "Sorry. Look, I'm not an expert on relationships but you should probably not come in contact with either Shou or Uruha for a few days. Try to set your thoughts and feelings straight."
Tora wanted to say something but Saga interrupted him before he could get even a sound out.
"And if you throw a party for your birthday, don't invite both Shou and Uruha. Leaving how awkward it'll be for the both of them aside, if they'll be locked under the same roof together, it'll end in blood. That much I can guarantee."
Tora nodded and had a pensive look on his face for a few moments. He then looked back at Saga and smiled. "Thanks, Saga. I'll think about what you said."
"No problem, man. Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go and apologize to Nao, possibly saving him from drowning his sorrow in ice cream."
They shared a laugh and Saga turned around, walking to the gate.
"Hey, Saga!" The blonde stopped and turned around, not knowing what Tora wanted. "When are you going to tell him?"
Saga smiled slightly and shrugged. "I don't know. I guess I'm afraid of his rejection." he said truthfully.
"Don't wait too long." Tora advised the blonde.
"The same to you."
